Dynamics of Status Symbols & Social Complexity

چکیده
In this paper, a symbolic version of the Simmel effect has been explored via computer simulation. By Simmel effect, we mean the dynamics of status symbols in hiearchically ordered societies. This phenomemon was highligthed by the sociologist Georg Simmel (1895), when he attempted to explain the rapid diffusion and decline of fashion. Simmel, hypothesised that the instability of fashion results from the combined action of two essential modes of the members of a hierarchically ordered society: imitation of higher status members, and distinction from those belonging to lower statuses. In order to test the Simmel’s Hypothesis we implemented a simulation model: the symbolic Simmel model (SySM) in which a set of artificial agents hierarchically orderd apply in different combination the rules of imitation and distinction in the common task of sharing symbols. Our simulation findings support the view that the Simmel condition allows for a variable or unstable fate of symbols: the success of status symbols starts to decline as soon as they become dominant.

A New Approach to Detect Congestive Heart Failure Using Symbolic Dynamics Analysis of Electrocardiogram Signal
The aim of this study is to show that the measures derived from Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals many a time perform better than the same measures obtained from heart rate (HR) signals. A comparison was made to investigate how far the nonlinear symbolic dynamics approach helps to characterize the nonlinear properties of ECG signals and HR signals, and thereby discriminate between normal and cong...

متن کاملEmoticons and Phrases: Status Symbols in Social Media
There is a sociolinguistic interest in studying the social power dynamics that arise on online social networks and how these are reflected in their users’ use of language. Online social power prediction can also be used to build tools for marketing and political campaigns that help them build an audience. Existing work has focused on finding correlations between status and linguistic features i...
متن کاملA social recommender system based on matrix factorization considering dynamics of user preferences
With the expansion of social networks, the use of recommender systems in these networks has attracted considerable attention. Recommender systems have become an important tool for alleviating the information that overload problem of users by providing personalized recommendations to a user who might like based on past preferences or observed behavior about one or various items. In these systems...
